Decline in job applications reflects changing dynamics

Junior Developers Dominate the Available Pool

Hybrid hiring, it’s not as simple as you’d think

According to insights from Indeed, there have been over 91,000 job applications across the UK Software Dev market from October to December and 1,334 active positions across the UK in November. It sounds like a lot, but that's a 15% drop in applications vs three months prior. Our internal data echoes this trend, in the last month we registered 679 new CV’s onto our CRM down from 855 in October, this continues the trend of talent actively seeking opportunities, and this shift is stirring up a more competitive atmosphere in the market once again.

In the bustling software market, the demand for seasoned talent is palpable. Examining job applications received from October to December, it's evident that 43.3% of applicants boast 5 years of experience or less, while another 24.48% fall into the 6-10 years' experience bracket. This trend highlights the prevalence of junior developers seeking their next big break in the industry and the scarcity of available senior talent.

Location continues to play a significant role in the challenge of talent acquisition. While many businesses embrace hybrid work models to accommodate employee flexibility, this hasn't necessarily broadened the talent pool across the country. Commuting long distances for onsite work days remains a deterrent for many. Notably, London retains its status as the most accessible talent hub, closely followed by Manchester. In contrast, Nottingham poses a considerable challenge, with only 1.19% of developers open to opportunities despite the rise of hybrid roles.

The average salary across the UK holds steady at £50,433, according to our latest internal data, and while we see salaries have been leveling off, they're still on the rise above inflation.
